Purpose The National Conference of Puerto Rican Women Inc. (NACOPRW) was founded in 1972 as a non-profit, non-partisan, tax-exempt 501 © 3 organization dedicated to promoting the full participation of Puerto Rican and other Hispanic women in their economic, social, and political life in the United States and Puerto Rico. With Headquarters in Washington D.C., NACOPRW maintains a visible presence at the National and State Levels through chapters in the United States and Puerto Rico. NACOPRW is one of thirty-one organizations governing the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) in Washington, D.C. Governance The National Board of Directors, which is composed of the President and Delegates of the local chapters, meets quarterly and constitutes NACOPRW’S policymaking body. NACOPRW provides to its membership access to educational workshops, training seminars, information dissemination and networking opportunities. The organization coalesces with other women’s groups and national Hispanic organizations, extending its visibility and outreach throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Scholarships Many NACOPRW chapters provide scholarships to Hispanic students residing within the communities they serve. A listing of organizations that provide scholarships to Hispanics is maintained at the national office and is available upon request. Networking NACOPRW constitutes a network of concerned Puerto Rican women and serves as a support system in facilitating their full participation in all aspects of society. Annual conferences NACOPRW Conferences bring together a group of dynamic Hispanic women from all over the United States who play significant leadership roles in their communities. NACOPRW has held twenty-eight annual conferences to include training and education in areas such as: Health, Leadership Training, Economic Development, Education, Technology, Mentoring, and Political Empowerment. Women of all ages from all professions attend NACOPRW conferences: from the student to the retired woman, from the house-wife to the accountant, sociologist, nutritionist, teacher, and health provider. Among the conference highlights are the exhibit booths provided by Federal and State government agencies, which inform participants of the services they provide and of the availability of the jobs within the agencies. Membership Active Members are women of Puerto Rican or Hispanic origin who subscribe to the goals of the organization and belong to a chapter. Corporate Members are private, for profit organizations that support NACOPRW’S civic efforts within the Hispanic community and are partners in promoting NACOPRW’S mission. These entities are considered associates of NACOPRW. National Members are individuals residing within cities where there is no local chapter and who wish to become actively involved I the work of the organization. These individuals are considered members-at-large. Local chapters sponsor a variety of activities that are relevant to community needs such as mentoring, leadership development, advocacy, educational forums and much more. Give – A – Gift Program NACOPRW’S Give a Gift Program provides its members and friends the opportunity to present a gift certificate for a NACOPRW membership in a chapter, or as a member at large. |
